Smooth Moves

by Kristin on March 29, 2011

I get a lot of questions, often after my Weekly Nibbles posts, looking for the recipes for the smoothies I drink a few times a week. Every so often after a really good one, I’ll post a recipe- but the truth is, I don’t tend to use recipes! I just add what sounds good and drink ‘er on up.

But since I got a few requests, I decided it was about time I posted a couple of my recent favorites.

As you may notice, there has been a little bit of a theme going on with my morning smoothies lately: desserts. I often crave sweet breakfasts, and what I find is if I start the day with a delicious, healthy sweet smoothie made with natural sweeteners, I don’t have as many sweet cravings during the day! Try it, maybe it will work for you too :)

These two smoothies have been on rotation once or twice a week for the last couple few weeks- I just can’t get enough! And packed with fruit, raw protein, healthy fats and super foods, I only feel like I’m indulging!

Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Smoothie
Serves 1

2 tbsp raw cashews
1 banana, frozen
1 tbsp chia seeds
1 scoop sun warrior vanilla protein powder (or pp of choice)
pinch cinnamon
pinch nutmeg
pinch sea salt
stevia, to taste
1/4 cup almond milk
1/2 cup water, more as needed
2 tbsp rolled oats
2 tbsp raisins

1. Add all ingredients except for oats and raisins to smoothie. Blend well.
2. Add oats and raisins, pulsing a few times to chop slightly.

Enjoy with a spoon!

Green Almond Joy smoothie
Serves 1

1 banana, frozen
1 medjool date, soaked
2 tbsp raw almonds, or 1 tbsp almond meal/pulp
1 tbsp raw cacao powder
2 tbsp dried coconut
1/2 tbsp chia seeds
1/2 scoop sun warrior vanilla (or pp of choice)
1/2 tsp maca (optional)
1/2 tsp spirulina (optional)
pinch cinnamon
large handful spinach
1/4 cup almond milk
1/2 cup water, more as needed

1. Place all ingredients in a blender, blend well. Sprinkle a little extra coconut on top and enjoy!

Feel free to add your own favorite superfoods to the mix- the more the better! I also love mine with a sprinkle of granola- lately I’ve been enjoying some gifted to me from my friend Gillian- so tasty!

Do you like to start the day with a sweet or savoury breakfast? What is your favorite smoothie add-in?

xo

Oatmeal raisin cookies are pretty much the best thing ever, so I would be all over that smoothie. Where did you find Sun warrior in Toronto? They had it at Noah’s for a while, but now they don’t…and it’s not at whole foods. I really don’t like Nutribiotic, but that is what I’ve been using lately because of lack of sun warrior!

Hey Haley- you can buy it at The Big Carrot dispensary! I believe Essence of Life in Kensington might have it too!

Seriously- personal chef- hired. I love how you do little toppings on your smoothies! And you know me- I am also a dessert for breakfast type. Trying to go for healthier versions of my true favourites too (cookies, cake, yum!)
